This blog post was written by Najla Attalah, a Gazan woman who participated in the U.S. State Department “Tech Women” program in 2013. Najla and other Tech Women alumni approached Gaza Sky Geeks (GSG) in January 2014 to ask if GSG could host an information session to spread the word about the Tech Women and Tech Girls programs. GSG hosted the event and over 100 Gazans attended.
Who could have imagined that a joke or a simple suggestion could be turned into a team and then into a workshop that attracts many people? That is what happened when some Tech Women alumni met with Gaza Sky Geeks staff and proposed to put on an information session about this U.S. Department of State program. The program brings women from Gaza and other parts of the world to Silicon Valley for 5 weeks.
The idea sprung from a normal conversation, or ‘’a conversation while you are standing,’’ as it is referred to in Gazan slang. We were standing around speaking about how to attract more women and girls to technology. We were speaking with tons of enthusiasm. Why do we want women to enter this sector? Do they need someone to encourage them to apply to TechWomen? Do women need such programs? I don’t know the answers to these questions, but I know that there is a bright future for the people who ask them.
The First Computer
I still remember the first computer my family had. It was the year 2002 and I was fourteen years old.
Oh my! Having a computer was like a miracle. That great thing that everybody was talking about had finally entered our house. I still remember how we asked our mother to save some money from her salary to buy the latest computer version. No one could have predicted that this computer would become our close friend, and that this great technology would be with each one of us during our university studies. This machine now takes care of many of my errands, and it is no longer restricted to being used only at home – now, it can also be used and taken anywhere I go!
Me and Speed
Life moves very fast. I can barely keep up with it. Every day you have more things to do, and the world keeps getting bigger and bigger. I have finally graduated from university and now I am searching for a purpose that can inspire me to be the person I want to be. Maybe it is just a dream, or it is just my imagination; all I know is that this fast-paced life is taking me towards this purpose just like it would take anybody else. The creation of the computer was a miracle that was followed by software applications and the Internet. This has lead life to become like a buttonhole: either you can be like a button that enters it and stays warm with the knowledge you can acquire, or you can strip yourself of this knowledge and keep watching the world with lost eyes without knowing where you are.
Where am I?
We in Gaza live in a very small geographical area, especially if compared with all the land nestled in the Earth. As we live in our own world of imagination, many people elsewhere may have reached a more advanced stage than we have. But the question remains: ‘’Where am I?”
I keep thinking about having my own career after university. The fast development of the world motivates me to find a way to apply what I’ve studied to achieve my personal dream.
I have a strong passion that drives me to tell you that life moves at an alarming pace, faster than the blink of eye. You may think that your university life has nothing to do with technology; however, technology is controlling us and is forcing us to familiarize ourselves with it. Therefore, we need to know where we stand and what we want to do.
TechWomen Program
My strong belief in myself made me apply for the TechWoman program in 2013. I am an architect and I have a great passion to experiment and to discover the world. I love anything related to heritage and history. I believe that technology can lead us to learning and discovering more through the new techniques it can perform. I went to the USA and learned many things which cannot be learned in Gaza. I learned about various technologies and programs that are not used in Gaza. Furthermore, what I learned gave me the inspiration to come up with my own new ideas. It gave me the strong belief that I will have a bright future.
This program was and still is a real addition to my life. I talk about the experience all the time. It was not a practical experience only, but it was a cultural experience as well. The program provides two mentors. Each one of them was helping me on time management to achieve my needs and ideas. Regarding the professional side, the program schedule was very rich. The program gave me the chance to do many things that I have never imagined to do, including learning about the companies that provide social media applications such as Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Google etc … The most important part of the experience was the training at the company I was placed in, one which specializes in the field that I chose (architecture). My experience was successful. My dream is to specialize in archaeology management and electronically documenting it. Whenever I see or read about archeological sites in Gaza, I know that I am stepping forward towards achieving my future dream. Regarding the cultural side, my words cannot describe how amazing the experience was. It gave me the chance to live a normal life as would any US citizen.
Gaza Sky Geeks
I cannot deny that I was surprised when I found out that this startup accelerator exists in Gaza, but at the same time, it brought a big smile to my face. On the one hand, I was surprised that Gaza – this tiny place! – would have a startup accelerator. On the other hand, I started to believe that my small dream can be achieved, as long as I believe in myself and keep forging forwards. The most important thing is that this place, Gaza Sky Geeks, is the most suitable for our imaginations. We want women to know the real meaning of participation in programs such as TechWomen. I want you to know the answers to these questions: What did I do after graduation? Why did I participate in TechWomen Program? Why do I want to share my experience with you? Why do I want to show you that a Gazan woman can succeed?
Cooperation leads us to know more
It was a joke that, due to our belief and passion, turned into a real desire to let women know there exists a program that can change the horizons of their thoughts. A program that can guide them. The Gaza Sky Geeks team knows that TechWomen / TechGirls program is the starting point for every woman to be what she wants to be. Gaza Sky Geeks members try their best to turn small ideas to successful companies through the determination of the owners.
The workshop that was held by the cooperation with Gaza Sky Geeks team was a gift for every woman who wants to achieve her goal. I believe that, when you have something to achieve, you should embark on that adventure, no matter the costs, even if you have to lose your job. You should understand that our existence is not bound by our minds or our three-dimensional earthly existence. Teamwork leads us to know more that we would ever know on our own.
We, the women who participated in the Tech Women and Tech Girls program, want to tell you about it. We want you to experience the vast difference between that first moment when you bought or used a computer and the moment when you begin to use this technology to better yourself and contribute to the world.
من قد يخيل له أن مزحة، أو اقتراح ما، يمكن أن يحول إلى فريق عمل ومن ثم إلى ورشة تستقطب حضورا مهتما في تلك المبادرة الصغيرة التي ألقيت كنوع من إثراء الحديث.
إنها بالفعل كانت نتاج ” حديث على الواقف” كما تقال بالعامية الغزية، وأثمرت عن إرادة، ودافعية عالية لجذب عدد أكبر من النساء والفتيات إلى هذا القطاع، لكن لم؟ لم نحن نهتم أن يتوجهن النساء إلى هذا المعترك، ويقدنالمغامرة بأنفسهن، أهن بحاجة إلى من يقول لهن أن يكن؟ أو أن يدفع بهن أن يقدمن في برامج تدعم النساء العاملات في التكنولوجيا، أنا نفسي لا أعلم الإجابة، ولكن أعلم أن ما يخبأه المستقبل أكثر إشراقا!.
جهاز الحاسوب الأول:
أتذكر تماما، أن أول جهاز حاسوب دخل منزلنا، حينها كنت في الرابعة عشرة من عمري، في عام 2002،
يا الهي،
دخول جهاز الحاسوب إلى المنزل كان أشبه بدخول معجزة كبيرة إليه، إن هذا الشيء العظيم الرهيب، الذي يتحدث عنه الجميع دخل منزلنا، مازلت أتذكر أيضا، كيف استجدينا أمي أن ترفع مقدارا ليس بيسير من راتبها لتأتي لنا بأحدث إصدار في ذلك الوقت.
من كان يعرف أن بعد ذلك، سيتحول جهاز الحاسوب إلى صديق لكل فرد في العائلة، وأن هذه التكنولوجيا العجيبة سترافق كل واحد فينا حسب تخصصه، اللآن أكاد أجزم أن معظم أعمالي تعتمد بشكل تلقائي شئت أم أبيت على هذا الجهاز ذو التكوين الفريد، وبدلا من أن يكون يقبع على مكتب في المنزل هو الآن يستطيع أن يمشي معي أينما أردت وأينما ذهبت.
أنا والسرعة:
الحياة تسير بسرعة بالكاد أستطيع أن أجاريها، كل يوم يستجد عملا جديدا، العالم يتسع بطاقات أكبر وأكبر وأكبر، أنهيت المرحلة الجامعية، وأنا أبحث عن تلك البذرة التي تفجر في داخلي اليقين، وتقودني إلى الطريق الذي أرتأيه، ربما يكون حلما، أو ربما تكون صورة ذهنية أتخيل نفسي أمثلها، كل ما أعرفه أن هذه العجلة السريعة تأخذني إليها، كما تأخذ أي أحد آخر، بعد أن كان الحاسوب جهازا معجزي في نشأته أصبحت تطبيقاته كذلك، الانترنت
دخل على خط المضي في الحياة، وأصبحت الحياة مثل عروة قميص إما أن تدخلها وتحكم إغلاقها لتظل متدفئا بما حصدته، أو تعري نفسك من المعرفة وتظل تراقب بعينين حائرتين العالم دون أن تعرف أين أنت؟
أين أنا؟
المساحة الجغرافية التي نعيش تكاد تكون مثل نقطة في بحر، إنها صغيرة وصغيرة جدا مقارنة بكل هذه اليابسة التي تحتضنها الكرة الأرضية، كما نحن نعيش وسط الحواري ووسط كل شحطاتنا الفكرية، هناك عوالم كثيرة وبشر آخرين يفكرون وربما وصلوا إلى مرحلة تستبقنا فأين أنا؟ وأين أنت منهم.
تفكيري الدائم بالرغبة في إيجاد مكاني خاصة بعد انتهاء الجامعة، والتطور السريع في العالم، يدفعني دوما أن أبحث وأواصل، أن أربط ما درست وما أعمل وما أحلم به بأين العالم يذهب.
في داخلي دافع كبير، أن أقول لك إنسان، إن الحياة تتقدم بسرعة مذهلة تكاد تضاهي رمشة العين التي جلبت عرش بلقيس، قد تكون أفنيت سنوات في الجامعة معتقدا أو معتقدة أن لا علاقة لها بالتكنولوجيا، لكن لا، إنها تسيرنا وتجعلنا نقترب إليها أكثر، لكن علينا أن نعرف أين نحن؟، وأين نريد أن نكون؟.
برنامج تيك ومن.
أجزم أن إيماني هو من جعلني أكون تيك ومن 2013، أنا مهندسة معمارية، ولدي شغف في أن أجرب وأن أقترب من العالم أكثر، أحب التراث، التاريخ، وكذلك أؤمن أن التكنولوجيا قد تقودنا إلى ما نريد بتقنيات أحدث، ذهبت إلى الولايات المتحدة وتعلمت ما لا يمكن أن أتعلمه مهما بقيت في غزة لسنوات، ربما البرامج التي تعلمتها والتكنولوجيا التي عاصرتها تحتاج إلى وقت لكي تُتبنى في غزة، لكن أستطيع القول أنها أضاءت في دماغي ألف فكرة قد أستطيع أن أسجلها وأكتبها، والأهم وشوشت لي ماذا يمكن أن يخبأ لي المستقبل إن استمريت على هذا الدرب.
البرنامج، كان ولازال إضافة نوعية حقيقة بالنسبة لي، تجربتي مع البرنامج كانت الأكثر حضوراً منذ لحظة عودتي في كل أحاديثي، فهي لم تكن تجربة عملية لممارسة عمل فقط، بل هي تتناول جانباً كبيراً من التعرف على الثقافة بالإضافة إلى الجانب المهني. ولضمان التكاملية والمعرفة، البرنامج يوفر في كل من الجانب المهني والثقافي مرشدين، كل واحدة كانت تقوم بالتخطيط معي لاستثمار الوقت بما يخدم حاجاتي وأفكاري. أما على الصعيد المهني كان جدول البرنامج غني جدا، ويقدم أشياء ربما حتى اللحظة لم أتخيل أني قمت بها وأصبحت أكثر قربا إليها من أي وقت، لم أتصور أني سأتعرف لكل الشركات التي تقوم عليها تطبيقات التواصل الاجتماعي مثل ( تويتر، فيس بوك، لينك اند، جوجل ….الخ” بالاضافة الى التجربة الحقيقة والأكثر ثراء العمل مع شركة متخصصة في المجال الذي وددته وأبلغتهم عنه من خلال تعبئة مسوحات يرسلها القائمون
على البرنامج لضمان المطابقة، وتجربتي كانت ناجعة وكلما نظرت إلى مبنى أثري في غزة أو قرأت أعلم أني أصبحت أقرب إلى تحقيق ما أرنو إليه مستقبلا في المضي قدماً في التخصص بإدارة التراث وتوثيقه الكترونياً. على الصعيد الثقافي إن الكلمات حقا أقل قدرة على وصف عمق التجربة وجماليتها، فإنك تتمكن من العيش كمواطن يمارس الحياة اليومية بكل أريحية.
Gaza Sky Geeks
لا أنكر أني استغربت قليلا حين عرفت بوجود هذه المسرعة، لكن حقيقة ارتسمت على محاي ابتسامة عريضة، من جانب كنت جدا مفتتنة بأن غزة هذه البقعة الصغيرة والتي قلت سابقا أنها نقطة في بحر يوجد بها مثل هذا المكان الذي قد يقود أفكارنا إلى يابسات أكثر اتساعا ومساحة، ومن ناحية أخرى بدأت أعرف أن ذلك الحلم الذي قد أتخيله في الفترة القادمة ممكن التحقيق، كل ما علي إلا أن أؤمن بريادتي وأنطلق. والأهم إنه المكان الأنسب ليتبنى شطحاتنا الفكرية، التي نريد من خلالها أن تعرف النساء ماذا يعني أن تشارك في برامج مثل برنامج تيك ومن، ماذا فعلت أنا بعدما تخرجت؟، لماذا سجلت ببرنامج تيك ومن؟ لماذا أريد أن أتحدث عن تجربتي؟ ما علاقة كل ما أفعله بما ذهبت لأختبره؟ ولماذا أريد لك فتاة في غزة تستطيع أن تسجل وأن تصر على الذهاب؟
المشاركة تقودنا لأن نعرف أكثر:
إنها مزحة، وتحولت بكل إيمان وشغف إلى رغبة جامحة، أن تعرف النسوة والفتيات أن هناك برامج تستطيع أن تنير لهم بصيرتهم الفكرية، أن ترشدهم أن تدلهم، فريق Gaza Sky Geeks، يعرف تماما أن هذه البرامج Techwomen, Techgirl قد تكون انطلاقة لأي أنثى تكون هي وذاتها، ومن أجدر منهم على معرفة ذلك وهم من يحتضون في كنفهم أفكارا ينتظرون من أصحابها بكل أمل أن تتحول إلى شركات يشار إليها بالبنان.
الورشة التي تم تنفيذها، بالتعاون مع فريق Gaza Sky Geeks، خرجت من القلب لكل أنثى تريد أن تحقق فكرة في رأسها، وكما أنا أؤمن أنني لأجل يقني ما قد أغامر مغامرات كبيرة مثل خسارة وظيفة أو أي شيء آخر ربما عليك أنت أن تؤمن أن الحياة لا تكمن فقط في دماغنا أو في المساحة التي يحتلها جسدنا، المشاركة تقودنا لأن نعرف أكثر من نحن.
أردنا كنسوة شاركت في البرنامج أن نخبركم عن برنامج Techgirls وكذلك tech womenK وأن تلمسوا بأنفسكم الفرق بين لحظة الفرح الأولى التي اشتريت بها أول حاسوب أو جلست عليه، وبين لحظة أخرى من خلال التكنولوجيا تخدمين نفسك وأفكارك.
