As we prepare for our fourth Startup Weekend, we thought it would be fun to see a flashback of the first ever Startup Weekend in Gaza. It took place in 2011 and was, in fact, the first Startup Weekend in all of Palestine.
Mohammed alAfranji, CEO of SADAF Technology Development, had attended a Startup Weekend in Dubai and brought back the experience. Mercy Corps’ Gaza Sky Geeks was one of the main organizers and funders for the event.
Amongst the winners of Startup Weekend 2011 was Datrios, a team that later became one of the first startups in Gaza to receive investment. Adam Stelle from UP Global, the organization that runs Startup Weekends around the world, came to Gaza for the event, as did several Googlers.
